Please view the December 2021 Committee Final Report titled Hartwell’s Hill and the Northern Tract of the Bedford Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant: Characterization, divestiture pathways, and future land use options – with special consideration given to potential for a Hartwell’s Hill solar farm
The Ad Hoc Hartwell Road Committee was a temporary committee appointed by the Select Board that operated between 2019 and 2022.
The purpose of this committee was to evaluate current zoning, topography, neighborhood involvement, and potential impacts on school population and tax base.
The ad hoc Hartwell Road Committee was created in response to the 2019 GSA sale at public auction of a parcel of the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant (NWIRP) land containing the Navy Hangar. The Select Board wanted to take a proactive approach to the divestiture of the remaining Navy acreage on Hartwell’s Hill to avoid the repetition of a quick sale without the Town or its people being able to have input into the process.
The committee was asked to characterize the NWIRP, its current and potential impacts on the surrounding community and Bedford in general, prepare a report on our findings for the Select Board, and offer some recommendations to the Select Board as to what the Town’s position should be in regard to the remaining NWIRP land on Hartwell’s Hill.
This committee had 7 members including:
- 1 Select Board member
- 1 Planning Board member
- 1 Conservation Commission member
- 1 Land Acquisition Committee member
- 3 At-Large members
