Sharps
Needles, syringes (often attached to needles), lancets: also called "fingerstick" devices, commonly used in the treatment of diabetes, auto injectors: including epinephrine and insulin pens - syringes pre-filled with fluid medication designed to be self-injected into the body, infusion sets, connection needles/sets: often used for patients on home hemodialysis
FDA-approved sharps containers are made of puncture-resistant plastic with leak-resistant sides and bottom. They also have a tight fitting, puncture-resistant lid. These containers come in a variety of sizes, including smaller sizes to use when traveling away from home. Click here for a list of FDA-approved sharps containers.
If an FDA-approved sharps container is not available, a heavy-duty household container, like a laundry detergent container, can be used as an alternative. All sharps containers should be:
- Made of heavy duty plastic
- Able to close with a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid, without sharps being able to come out
- Upright and stable during use
- Leak-resistant
- Properly labeled to warn of hazardous waste in the container
Do EpiPens Count as Sharps?
- USED EpiPens ALWAYS count as sharps and must be disposed of in a sharps container.
- UNUSED EpiPens that have an epinephrine salt count as sharps. To determine if your EpiPen contains an epinephrine salt, look at the box the EpiPen came in and/or the EpiPen itself. Here you will find a list of what is in the EpiPen.
- Your EpiPen DOES contain an epinephrine salt if any of these are listed in the medication list:
- Epinephrine chloride
- Epinephrine hydrochloride
- Epinephrine sodium metabisulfite
- Sodium metabisulfite
Sodium chloride
UNUSED EpiPens that do not contain and epinephrine salt must be disposed of as hazardous waste.
