On January 10, 2024 at approximately 10:00 AM, a sanitary sewer overflow near 299 Great Rd was identified by the Bedford Department of Public Works. The overflow continued for a duration of 25.75 hours, and it is estimated that a volume of 808,000 gallons of discharge was released before it ceased on Jan 11, 2024 at approximately 11:45 AM. The overflow likely consisted of untreated sewage and waste.
Potentially affected municipalities include Bedford, Burlington, and Billerica, and potentially affected water bodies include Shawsheen River. Avoid contact with these water bodies for 48 hours after the discharge or overflow ceases due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants.
