Rain Barrels Now Available for Bedford Residents Through a Partnership with The Great American Rain Barrel Company
Bedford, MA – The Town of Bedford’s Department of Public Works has partnered with The Great American Rain Barrel Company to offer affordable rain barrels to residents.
Rain barrels attach to roof downspouts to collect water that can be stored for future use to water plants, gardens, and lawns. By using rain barrels, Bedford residents can help conserve water while also reducing demand on the municipal water system during times of drought. According to the EPA, rain barrel use could save the average homeowner 1300 gallons of water annually and decrease water bills by as much as 40%.

In addition to cost saving benefits, rain barrels have many important environmental benefits related to stormwater management. By reducing the amount of stormwater runoff that enters the Town’s drainage system, risks of localized flooding are reduced significantly. The reduction in runoff also improves water quality to rivers and streams by eliminating the potential for roof water to become contaminated with fertilizers, animal waste, or oil and gas drippings from vehicles.
