New at the Recycling Center: Bulky Rigid Plastic Recycling

NEW! Bulky Rigid Plastics Recycling Drop-off

Based on the popularity of the prior special collection events, Bedford Public Works is pleased to announce that oversized plastic items, known as Bulky Rigid Plastics, have been added as a new permanent drop-off collection at the Compost & Recycling Center on Carlisle Rd.

What are Bulky Rigid Plastics (BRP)? Bulky Rigid Plastics are oversized plastic items such as 5-gal buckets, molded plastic toys or plastic lawn furniture. Because of the size and shape, BRPs are not acceptable in the curbside recycling program and require special handling.

Residents can now bring these oversized plastic items, free of charge, to the Compost & Recycling Center during operating hours. Collected items will be hauled to the Casella MRF in Auburn, MA, where the material is baled and then sent on to a plastics reclaimer to be used in manufacturing new products with recycled content. Items should be rinsed clean of any dirt and dry.

Acceptable Items:

  • Buckets, totes
  • Laundry baskets
  • Plastic furniture
  • Storage containers
  • Car seats (fabric and belts removed)
  • View the full flyer here

We Cannot Accept: PVC, tarps or plastic sheeting, hoses, vinyl siding or any item containing a battery or that previously contained hazardous waste.

Bulky Rigid Plastic items will also continue to be part of the curbside bulky item program, however, items collected by Republic Services with the Monday bulky route are disposed of with other municipal solid waste and will not be recycled or reused. Residents are strongly encouraged to bring acceptable BRP materials to the Recycling Center as an alternative to disposal.
