South Road Sidewalk Project
Construction Updates
(November 1, 2021) Construction is currently underway. In general, work will happen Monday through Friday from 7 am to 5:30 pm depending on the weather, and on some, Saturdays from 8 am to 3 pm. Driveway access will be maintained throughout the project, but please expect delays if they're working right in front of your property. The Bedford Police Department will be on-site to direct traffic and to ensure everyone's safety. Please use caution around heavy equipment.
The schedule below provides an overview of the approximate construction timeline. While every effort will be made to stick to the schedule, changes occur dynamically and the website cannot keep up with moment-to-moment conditions. - October 11 - Erosion controls and tree protection put in place
- October 25 - Tree removal
- November 1 - Remove tree stumps, begin excavation
- November 8 - Set granite curbing, spread gravel, fine grading
- November 15 - Continue fine grading, pour concrete handicap ramps, install bases for Rapid Flashing Beacons
- November 22 (Holiday Week) - Finish all fine grading, apply binder course for sidewalk
- November 29 - Finish up binder course and install Rapid Flashing Beacons
- December 6 - Work at Evergreen Avenue intersection, rip up and pave the roadway, apply top course for sidewalk
- December 13 - Spread loam, and clean up the job site
- Spring, 2022 - Reseed lawns and tree planting
Project Overview
The Bedford DPW is overseeing the design and construction of a new sidewalk along the east side of South Road from 172 South Road (near the Hartwell Road intersection) south to Evergreen Avenue. The project will feature a 5-foot-wide ADA-compliant asphalt sidewalk with a grass strip separating the sidewalk from the roadway or a granite curb depending on the available right-of-way. Two sets of push-button activated pedestrian crossing beacons will be installed at the Hartwell Town Forest and the Liberty Road/Evergreen Avenue intersection crosswalks. Permeable pavement will be used in the resource area around Hartwell Brook.

Project Overview
The DPW is finalizing plans for the construction of a new sidewalk along the east side of South Road from 172 South Road (near the Hartwell Road intersection) to Evergreen Avenue. The project will feature a 5-foot-wide ADA-compliant asphalt sidewalk with a grass strip separating the sidewalk from the roadway or a vertical granite curb depending on the available right-of-way. Two sets of Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) will be installed at the Hartwell Town Forest and the Liberty Road/Evergreen Avenue intersection crosswalks. Permeable pavement will be used in the areas around Hartwell Brook. Construction is anticipated to take place in FY2022.
