Work along Middlesex Turnpike from Crosby Drive in Bedford to Manning Road in Billerica is scheduled to resume the week of March 22nd. Now that the utility poles and overhead wires have been relocated, the general contractor, Barletta Heavy Division, will remobilize for the 2021 construction season. They will start at the Shawsheen River to complete the retaining wall, finish the drainage system and install the curbing and sidewalks. Once the northbound lane is complete, traffic will be moved to that side of Middlesex Turnpike so that the southbound lane can be built.
During the project, two-way travel along Middlesex Turnpike will be in effect before 9 am and after 2 pm Motorists driving through the work zone during midday should expect a delay in travel time. Please use caution and watch for police details directing traffic.
This project is the last of a multi-year program to improve traffic through the corridor linking Burlington, Bedford, and Billerica. Similar to the other phases of the project, Middlesex Turnpike will be widened to two lanes in each direction with protected left turn lanes at all driveways. In addition, new traffic control signals will be installed at Oak Park Drive in Bedford and 900 Middlesex Turnpike and Manning Road in Billerica. There will be bike lanes and sidewalks along both sides of the roadway. The project is being funded by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and is expected to be complete by the end of 2023.
