green2-r Q. Why was my cart moved? it was put down in a different place from where I put it out.

yellow1-r A. If your cart was too close to any obstacles the driver would have moved it before the automated arm could lift and empty the cart. Please place the cart at least 3 feet from all obstacles, such as mail boxes, trees or recycle bins. Try putting the recycling near your mailbox and the refuse cart on the other side of the driveway.

green2-r Q. I have so much trash /refuse.  What am I going to do?

yellow1-r A. Here are a couple suggestions:  Make sure you recycle everything you can.  Do you have items that are in good enough condition to donate?  If you still have too much, you may buy Official overflow bags for occasional use or pay for a second cart.

green2-r Q. Why did you choose a 48 gallon cart?  (It’s too small it’s too big…. etc.)

yellow1-r A. The trash cart provides a minimum allocation for household refuse that will be picked up at no charge for Bedford residents.  A family of three to four should easily be able to fit their refuse in the cart most if not  all of the time.

Tip: If you use the smaller white kitchen bags in the cart, you can pack more refuse in the cart.

green2-r Q. How do I get overflow bags?

yellow1-r A. Bags are sold in rolls of 5 bags for $7.50 ($1.50/ bag). They will be available for sale at Moison Hardware, Stop& Shop and Whole Foods.

green2-r Q. Do I need to use overflow bags inside the cart?

yellow1-r A. No, but you should use regular trash bags inside the cart. This will keep the cart much cleaner.

green2-r Q. Is there a hardship discount on the bags?.............................

yellow1-r A. There is no discount.

green2-r Q. I’m a two family, why didn’t I get two carts?

yellow1-r A. We need to verify that your property is a legal two- family. Let me take your name and number, we’ll research it and get back to you.

green2-r Q. How do I get a second cart?

yellow1-r A. The Town would like residents to try using the new cart for a few weeks to see if they really need a second cart. Don’t forget, the more you recycle, the more room you have in your cart.  Applications for a second cart will be accepted after September 30, the application will be available on-line or you can come to the DPW at 314The Great Road.  The fee is $150 for the first year and $100 for every year after that.  Payment is required by check, made payable to the Town of Bedford.  The fee is not pro-rated.

FYI:  the resident will be billed for the second year. At that time, they can let the DPW know if they do not want to keep the cart for another year.

green2-r Q. Is there any help available if I am unable to move the barrel?

yellow1-r A.You may find that it is easier than you thought, give it a try.
Do you have family in town?  Could you ask a neighbor?
You may choose to purchase overflow bags instead of using the cart.
