On April 17th, the Town of Bedford will be switching its source of drinking water from the MWRA system to the Town of Burlington supply. This will alter the type of chlorine used for disinfection which may impose a slight taste and odor change in your water. There may also be a small reduction in pressure during this time.
By using the Burlington water supply for approximately 4 weeks, we expect to improve the disinfection residuals to the outer areas of our distribution system. This should help with the water quality issues we experienced last summer due to low chlorine levels.
Other water quality projects are also underway. The Water Division is installing mixing systems in our 2 large storage tanks – Pine Hill and Crosby Drive. By mixing the tanks, warm stratified water at the top of the tanks will be eliminated. Also, the 10” diameter water main along Great Road will be cleaned and cement lined starting in mid-April. This process scrapes out any rust deposits which harbor conditions related to poor chlorine residuals. A permanent cement lining is then installed which will provide a clean surface for the interior of the pipe.
